editing and communications: writing
clear and concise materials (briefings, websites, annual reports,
etc); synthesising multiple documents into single reports;
editing and finalising draft materials; and developing communications
strategies.
Examples of consultancies:
• Analysed
the results of a multi-methodology 360º Stakeholder Assessment to inform the organisation’s Five Year Evaluation. Identified
the key findings and proposed recommendations within a synthesis report
for members of the international Board, donor governments
and other international stakeholders.
Wrote
and/or edited a series of communication materials to document and promote
the organisation’s practical experiences. Included
a:manual
on mainstreaming gender into AIDS programmes; set
of guidelines on counselling children affected by HIV and AIDS; leaflet
on involving men in home based care; and report
on the role of NGO-based NGO support providers in Southern and Eastern
Africa.
Wrote
up an evaluation report of LifeTrain Express – a project to
support people living with HIV to re-enter the employment market. Reviewed
monitoring reports, analysed project data and identified the key results
and recommendations. Incorporated feedback from the organisation and
produced a final report for donor audiences.
Skill
area 2: Policy development and advocacy:
translating
complex issues into key messages; using community lessons to
inform policy-making; developing ‘tailor made’ policy
materials; liaising with policy makers; and representing organisations
at forums.
Examples of consultancies:
Coordinated
and supported civil society delegates on the UNAIDS Global Task
Team to enhance the harmonisation of HIV and AIDS responses.
Facilitated teleconferences, provided thematic briefings and
produced an e-bulletin on
the teams results.
Wrote
policy reports consolidating consultations among, and advocacy messages
from, global civil society: ‘Bringing
Prevention Back to the Forefront’ (to inform the UNAIDS
Global Prevention Strategy);and 'Civil
Society and the ‘Three Ones''(to inform the UNAIDS principles).
Co-wrote ‘Get
Involved’ - a handbook
to advocate to lesbian and gay community members to become active citizens.
Wrote motivational case studies about people who are magistrates, school
governors, councillors, etc.
Skill
area 3: Good practice research,
analysis and evaluation: identifying
research criteria; developing quantitative and qualitative methodologies;
facilitating interviews and questionnaires; analysing data and
results; and formulating recommendations.
Examples of
consultancies:
Documented
a pilot project on mainstreaming HIV and AIDS into sustainable rural
livelihood projects. Set research criteria, analysed
data and interviewed community members, local leaders and staff. Assessed
the project’s core components, lessons learned and ‘added
value’.
Co-wrote ‘Handbook
on Access to HIV and AIDS Related Treatment’.
Contributed good practice information and tools - including many field-tested
in India and Zambia - to provide a practical resource for people living
HIV and other community stakeholders.
Led an assessment of the involvement of service users in the management
of HIV and AIDS services. Facilitated interviews and focus groups with
stakeholders and supported the development of an action plan.
Skill
area 4: Participatory
consultation and facilitation: coordinating
consultations among service users and civil society; devising
participatory training tools; writing toolkits; facilitating
skills-building workshops; and chairing multi-agency meetings.
Examples
of consultancies:
• UNAIDS: Led a review
of civil society involvement in the agency’s Programme
Coordinating Board. Carried out a literature and peer practice
review and interviewed over 35 senior-level stakeholders, including
from Member States and UN Co-sponsors. Presented recommendations
to improve future practice. (with the underlined text in grey
and linked to the attached document)
Developed
‘Effective
Peer Education’ a handbook for young people in the UK and
developing countries. Devised tools for cross-cultural audiences, incorporated
feedback from field tests and produced a final resource, emphasising
participatory and youth-friendly approaches.
Facilitated
a planning retreat for the network’s Management Committee. Guided
members through a review of the organisation’s results and lessons
and led exercises to re-focus its vision and goals.
Skill
area 5: Project design and management:
facilitating strategic planning;
developing
project and funding proposals; supervising and supporting teams;
liaising with donors; developing and managing budgets; and reporting
on results.
Examples of consultancies:
Was
the lead consultant on a project with UNFPA, UNAIDS and Young Positives
to develop Report
Cards on HIV prevention for girls and young women in 12 countries.
Designed key elements of the methodology and developed core resources.
Supervised in-country consultants and chaired ‘country conferences’ to
develop recommendations.
Designed
and led an external evaluation of the Joint Oxfam HIV and AIDS Programme
to fund and train community groups in KwaZulu Natal and Northern Province.
Developed evaluation questions focusing on the programme’s
partnerships, management processes and governance structure, and led
semi-structured interviews with over 50 stakeholders. Presented the
final report to an international meeting in The Hague.
Led an audit
of services for marginalised groups (including people with mental
health problems and lesbian and gay people) in 15 Neighbourhood Renewal
Areas of the city. Designed the research criteria, managed the compilation
of data and wrote the final report.
